HILLSIDE FARM BEEF

We have been producing registered Angus genetics for many years and now with more demand for muscle and hybrid vigor from our customers, we are producing black composite bulls from our composite cow herd with the genetics of black Limousin, Belgium Blue, Angus and with Bazadaise as a terminal sire.

These cattle are thrifty in the hills. (We don't supplement feed our bulls, even during dry years.) They calve with ease and produce lively growthy calves with plenty of muscle that the butchers pay a premium for!

Our bulls are reasonably priced ($1,800 to $2,200) to do a good job in any commercial herd. They can be handled easily and are electric fence trained.

The Bazadaise (Baz-a-day) breed which originates from the Baza region in France , and are highly adaptable to any terrain from NT to Tasmania . Acclaimed for their hardiness, high fertility and ease of calving developed through natural selection, these cattle cross particularly well with Angus, Murry Greys, Brahman, Droughtmaster and Santa Gertrudis. They produce tender high quality beef with fine boned carcases of exceptional meat volumes per beast.

They are renowned for their grass finished meat qualities and have high yielding carcases of 75% plus, with a marbling score of 1 and 2. The flavour, tenderness and fine grain of this meat makes it sought after by butchers and consumers.

BREEDING COWS

Dawn has spent 15 years in Canada as an AI technician and feedlot Animal Health Technician (Vet Nurse). She enjoyed the Canadian rural lifestyle and as a hobby, bred Australian Cattle Dogs, Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs and Kelpies which she imported into Canada in 1975 and trialed in Obedience and cattle (stock dog) trials and her popular training clinics were held throughout North America .

Being an AI technician allowed Dawn to become proficient in the study of genetics performance in beef and diary cattle and breeding by AI approximately 20,000 head in the Eastern Irrigation District of Alberta (Brooks).

Dawn and her life partner, Canadian Steve Darago, have a son Blaine Darago (27) at present living and working in Armidale

Below are a few examples of our breeding cows and heifers. The photos taken during the 2006 drought show how well they rustle for feed on native grass only.
